Chicken Moulting
It’s that time of year when your chooks look half naked and some what dishevelled and the coop has so many feathers on the ground it looks like a fox attack.
This is our poor Pip, she has gone through such a heavy moult this year, she looks so little and sad. We though we would share a few tips with you on how to help them get though this time.
🐓Chickens need extra protein to help regrow their feathers, so swapping to a higher protein feed such as Barastoc Grains and Greens will help up their protein levels. As well as adding in extras like Chick Stix and meals worms also gives them a boost.
🐓Making sure their coop is draught free and they have plenty of straw to nest into to keep warm.
🐓Watch out for hen pecking, other chickens can peck the exposed skin and cause redness or bleeding.
Another tip I found out recently is this, try and refrain from handling your chooks while they are regrowing their feathers. The new pencil feathers are full of blood and nerve endings and can be sore and uncomfortable when touched.
